History:

Syncrude Canada Ltd., located north of Fort McMurray, is the world's largest producer of light sweet crude oil from oil sand, and the largest single source of oil in Canada.

For many years now, Syncrude has been one of Canada's largest industrial employer of Aboriginal people. Our goal is to have Aboriginal participation in the workforce that reflects the demographics of the region.

* We currently have the capacity to supply 15% of the nation's petroleum requirements.
* We operate a large oil sand mine, utilities plant, bitumen extraction plant and upgrading facility that processes bitumen and produces value-added light, sweet crude oil for domestic consumption and export. We call our new improved product Syncrude Sweet Premium (SSP).
* In 2007, we produced 111.3 million barrels of Syncrude Sweet Blend.
* In 2006, we completed construction of our largest ever multi-staged expansion called Syncrude 21 that increased our total daily production capacity to around 350,000 barrels of Syncrude Sweet Blend. Further expansion is being contemplated.
* Our operations provide jobs for 14,000 people directly and indirectly across Canada.
* We are the largest industrial employer of Aboriginal people in Canada. Aboriginals make up 9% of our employee workforce. In 2007, a record $143 million in business was conducted with Aboriginal businesses in our region. In total, Syncrude has conducted more than $1 billion in business with Aboriginal companies.
* Syncrude is one of the largest private sector employers in Alberta, employing more than 4,700 people directly and an average of 1,000-1,500 maintenance contractor employees.
* On behalf of our Owners, we spend more than $40 million annually on research and development. We also operate one of the largest private-sector research programs in Western Canada and are one of the top 50 R&D spenders in Canada.
* The Syncrude Project results in substantial returns to the people of Canada and Alberta, including royalty payments, and federal and provincial taxes, exceeding $5 billion to date.
* In excess of $1 billion is spent annually on purchased goods, services and salaries - of which 90% is spent in Alberta - on regular plant operations alone.
* To date, Syncrude has reclaimed over 4,500 hectares of land disturbed by mining operations. We have planted close to five million tree and shrub seedlings.
* Our corporate headquarters are located in the city of Fort McMurray, 440 kilometres northeast of Edmonton, Alberta. Our Mildred Lake facility is 40 kilometres north of the city, with our Aurora project located an additional 35 kilometres north of Mildred Lake. Our operations are found on the Athabasca Oil Sands Deposit.
