History:
ATCO Power is a leading Canadian based, international developer of independent power projects. It was established in 1988 to pursue projects in Alberta and around the world. It has grown rapidly to $2 billion in assets and will soon operate nearly 5000 MW of capacity.
The challenge began with the newly deregulated market in the United Kingdom. ATCO Power developed and constructed its first major generating facility, a $1.4 billion, 1000 MW, gas fired power station at Barking, near London.
This success was followed with a 120 MW plant in British Columbia and, in the 1990s during deregulation of the Alberta electricity market, four projects totaling nearly 600 MW in that province. One of these, the Joffre plant is the largest cogeneration facility in Canada while another, Poplar Hill, won Power Magazine's 2000 Power Plant Of The Year award for its use of a synchronous condenser.
Currently ATCO Power has four projects under construction in Canada with a capacity of over 600 MW. One of these is a run-of-river hydro project in southern Alberta.
ATCO Power operates 12 natural gas turbine plants worldwide and three coal-fired generating stations in Alberta.
ATCO Power has a strategy of intensive involvement in project design, construction, financing and operations. It has an impressive track record of successful partnerships and extensive experience in operating in an environmentally responsible, community friendly manner.
