History:
A Union Making a Difference CLAC is an independent Canadian labour union representing thousands of workers in a wide range of industry sectors-construction, health care, retail, service, transportation, manufacturing, and others. Based on Christian social principles, CLAC's approach to labour relations stresses worker freedom, participation, and dignity. It strives to achieve a balance between individual and collective rights. CLAC organizes workers to promote their interests and establish justice, primarily through collective bargaining. As a full-service union, CLAC has established funds to provide members with a variety of benefits-health and disability insurance, a national pension plan, group RSPs, apprenticeship subsidies, training grants, layoff assistance, scholarships, and a defense fund. The union serves its members from its head office, near Toronto, and 12 regional offices in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Ontario.
Representation with Integrity
- CLAC promotes a cooperative approach to workplace challenges and opportunities. - Over 150 representative, administrative, and support staff provide professional hands-on service and ensure a low member-to-representative ratio. - CLAC negotiates excellent wages and benefits as well as non-economic conditions to promote the health, safety, and well-being of its members. - It seeks to balance workers' needs with the long-term viability of the enterprise. - CLAC fully supports workers' freedom of association. Workers do not have to join the union as a condition of employment (no closed shop).
Diverse Membership
- CLAC represents over 47,000 workers who are covered by more than 500 collective agreements. - It is the third largest, all-Canadian private-sector union and 26th largest of more than 1,000 unions registered with Human Resources and Social Development Canada. - Membership is concentrated in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Ontario. - Members work in many sectors of the economy-construction, health care, education, emergency services, hospitality, manufacturing, retail, and transportation. - CLAC is a major player in the construction industry of Alberta and British Columbia. - In Ontario, it is one of the largest unions in long-term health care, with many years of representation experience in the sector. - Working in cooperation with unions around the globe, CLAC is actively engaged in international trade union development and support, part of its commitment to international justice, freedom, and solidarity. - CLAC is a founding member of the International Trade Union Confederation, which represents 168 million workers worldwide.
Full Range of Services
- CLAC offers comprehensive health and benefit insurance plans. - Its national pension plan, established in 1974, is one of Canada's top defined-contribution plans, providing a 9.3 percent average rate of return since its inception. - CLAC provides industry-specific skills and health and safety training from its regional training centres or, in some cases, on work sites. - Members have access to expert advice on workers compensation claims and appeals. - Bereavement fund benefits are available to qualified members in the event of the death of an immediate family member. - CLAC's Advantage Program provides members with discounts from vendors across Canada. - Members or their immediate family can apply for one of eight $1,500 education scholarships awarded annually. - Staff representatives are supported by CLAC's extensive research and education programs. - CLAC lobbies government and industry on issues of concern to members. - All members are kept up to date on CLAC's activities through its national magazine, the Guide. - On-line information and services are available on the union's website, www.clac.ca.
