APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING PROVIDERS

Printer Friendly

Key participants in Alberta’s apprenticeship and industry training system, Alberta’s apprenticeship training providers work with the Board, industry committees and Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training to enhance access and responsiveness to industry through the delivery of technical training. They develop lesson plans from course outlines established by industry and deliver technical training to apprentices.

Training provider representatives attend Board and industry committee meetings to ensure training remains current and to ensure Board and committee members are aware of the needs and concerns of the training providers.

There are two publicly funded technical institutions: the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in Edmonton and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) in Calgary. Together, they provide approximately 77 per cent of the technical training seats available each year to registered apprentices.

There are seven community colleges: Keyano in Fort McMurray, Lethbridge Community, Medicine Hat, Olds, Portage in Lac La Biche and Red Deer which together provide approximately 22 per cent of the technical training seats available each year to registered apprentices.

Hairstylist technical training is provided by two private vocational schools: Eveline Charles in Edmonton and Delmar in Calgary. These schools are approved for Hairstylist apprenticeship training every three to five years through a competitive request-for-proposal (RFP) process.

Technical training funding is provided by Alberta Advanced Education and Technology through base grants and apprenticeship access funding to public institutions and fee-for-service contracts in case of the private training providers. Registered apprentices share in the cost of this training.
