Definition

Accreditation

Refers to the formal Provincial Apprenticeship Committee (PAC) recognition of a training program or course of study in accordance with policy established by the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board.

Accredited – Related Apprentice

Refers to individuals who have completed part of a PAC accredited apprenticeship program in a related trade and who may receive credit towards their current apprenticeship.

Accredited – Related Journeyperson

Refers to individuals who have a Journeyman certificate in a related trade and who may receive credit towards their current apprenticeship.

Approved Employer Training

A program type referring to individuals who have completed a PAC accredited employer training program.

Approved Private Vocational School

A program type referring to training in a PAC accredited and licensed private vocational school.

Credit

Refers to the amount by which the on-the-job training or technical training may be reduced for a specific contract of apprenticeship.  Credit may be granted as a result of successful completion of an accredited program or an employer’s recommendation and any required prior learning assessment examinations.

Date Requested

Refers to the date an institution requested accreditation for a particular program or course of study.

Exam Credit

Refers to any particular industry examination an apprentice is granted credit for as part of PAC recommended accreditation.

Note: For Pre-employment type programs, individuals are granted credit for exams they achieve a pass mark in, following the successful completion of the program.

Location

Refers to the specific site where an accredited program or course of study takes place.

On the Job Credit

Refers to the number of hours of formal instruction in an apprenticeship program credited to an individual towards their apprenticeship.  On the Job Credit may be granted as a result of successful completion of an accredited program or an employer’s recommendation and any required prior learning assessment examinations.

PAC Review

Refers to the date that the PAC last reviewed the accreditation of an accredited program.

Pre - Employment

A program type generally referring to a PAC accredited program or course of study designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in their chosen trade.  As a minimum, an accredited Pre-employment program covers the outcomes of first period.  The length of the programs varies, but is generally 1.5 times the length of the first period of apprenticeship.

Program Name

Refers to the title of the program or course of study assigned by the institution offering an accredited program. 

Program Type

Refers to the category the program or course of study fits into. i.e., pre-employment, technician, technology, high school, etc.

Status

Refers to the current accreditation status of the program or course of study.  i.e., ongoing, term certain with expiry.

Technical Training Credit

Refers to the period (s) of apprenticeship technical training credited to an individual’s apprenticeship as a result of successful completion of an accredited program or success in the prescribed prior learning assessment (PLA) exam recommended by the employer.

Technician

A program type generally referring to a one year PAC accredited program.

Technology Graduate

A program type generally referring to a two year PAC accredited program.
