Foreign trained workers may have learned their skills in a formal program or on-the-job training and work experience.
Permanent residents or Canadian Citizens who are trained outside of Canada, who want to work in a compulsory trade must be a registered apprentice, a certified journeyperson, or have an approved application for certification. See Working in Alberta for more information.
Foreign trained workers who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents and want to work must be a certified journeyperson or have an approved application for certification to work in a compulsory certification trade. The Alberta Qualification Certificate Program assesses the skills and knowledge of a tradesperson who wants to attain Alberta Qualification Certificate. To apply for this certification you must meet the minimum requirements of work-experience or a combination of education and work experience.
Temporary Foreign Workers and/or their employers are responsible for the support and training required to successfully obtain certification in the Qualification Certificate Program.
Successful applicants are granted an Alberta Qualification Certificate under the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Act. This certification may lead to permanent residency in Alberta. See Your Ticket to Permanent Residency in Alberta for more information.
